How to play

  1. Learn the base rank. The first foundation card sets the base rank; every foundation builds up by suit from there and wraps past the King back to the Ace.
  2. Work the reserve and tableau. Tap a card, then tap where to move it. Build the tableau down in alternating colours (it wraps too), and play the reserve’s top card whenever it fits. Empty piles refill from the reserve automatically.
  3. Draw and complete. Tap the stock to deal three cards at a time to the waste; tap the empty stock to recycle. Complete all four foundations to win.

About Canfield Solitaire

Canfield Solitaire is the famously hard casino patience game. A 13-card reserve looms over four tableau piles, and the foundations do not start on Aces — instead the first card flipped sets a random base rank, and all four foundations build up from there, wrapping past the King back round to the Ace. The tableau builds down in alternating colours and wraps the same way, and whenever a tableau pile empties it refills automatically from the reserve. You draw from the stock three cards at a time to find your moves. Clearing the deep reserve is the real battle. No signup.

Frequently asked questions

Build the four foundations up by suit from a base rank set by the first card, wrapping past the King to the Ace. Build the four tableau piles down in alternating colours (also wrapping), play cards off the 13-card reserve, and draw from the stock three at a time. Complete all four foundations to win.

Canfield’s defining rule is that the first foundation card sets a random base rank, and every foundation must start on that same rank. Building wraps around, so from a base of 9 you would go 9, 10, J, Q, K, A, 2, and on up to 8.

The reserve is a stack of 13 cards whose top card is always available to play onto a foundation or the tableau. As you remove its top card the next one becomes available. Emptying the reserve is the hardest part of winning Canfield.

While the reserve still has cards, an empty tableau pile refills automatically from the top of the reserve. Once the reserve is gone, you are free to move any card into an empty pile yourself.

On Easy the stock deals one card at a time; on Normal it deals three at a time and you can recycle the waste as many times as you like. On Hard you draw three at a time with no recycling.
