How to play

  1. Sow a pit. Click one of your six pits to scatter its stones counter-clockwise into the following pits and your store.
  2. Earn free turns and captures. A last stone in your store means another turn; a last stone in an empty pit on your side captures the pit opposite it.
  3. Fill your store. When one side empties, the remaining stones go to their owner — collect the most stones to win.

About Mancala

Mancala is one of the oldest board games in the world, and this is the classic Kalah version. You take the bottom row of six pits and the store on your right; the computer takes the top row and the store on its left. On your turn you pick up all the stones from one of your pits and sow them one by one, counter-clockwise, into the pits that follow — dropping one in your own store but skipping your opponent’s. Land your last stone in your store and you go again. Land it in an empty pit on your own side and you capture that stone plus everything in the pit across from it. When either side runs out of stones the rest are swept into their owner’s store, and whoever has the most stones wins. Pick a difficulty to set how sharply the computer plays. It all runs in your browser. No signup, no download, nothing uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

On your turn, click one of your six pits to pick up all its stones and sow them one at a time, counter-clockwise, into the pits that follow — including your own store but skipping your opponent’s store. The goal is to collect more stones in your store than the computer.

If the last stone you sow lands in your own store, you immediately take another turn. Chaining free turns together is one of the strongest tactics in the game.

If your last stone lands in an empty pit on your own side, you capture that stone along with all the stones in the pit directly across from it.

The game ends as soon as one player’s six pits are all empty. The remaining stones are then swept into their owner’s store, and the player with the most stones wins.

This is standard Kalah: two rows of six pits, two stores, four stones in each pit to start, counter-clockwise sowing, free turns and captures.
