About Mastermind

Mastermind is the classic code-breaking puzzle. The computer hides a secret row of coloured pegs, and your job is to deduce it. After every guess you get feedback: a black peg for each peg that is the right colour in the right position, and a white peg for each that is the right colour but in the wrong position. Use the clues to narrow down the code and crack it before your ten guesses run out. No signup, no download, nothing uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

The computer hides a secret code of coloured pegs. You build a guess from the colour palette and press Check. After each guess you get black and white peg clues telling you how close you were, and you use those clues to deduce the exact code within your allotted guesses.

A black peg means one of your pegs is the right colour in the right position. A white peg means a peg is the right colour but in the wrong position. The clues never tell you which specific peg they refer to — working that out is the puzzle.

Each peg is matched at most once. Exact matches are counted as black pegs first, then the remaining guess and code pegs are paired up by colour for white pegs, so a duplicated colour can never earn more clues than there are matching pegs.

You get ten guesses to crack the code. If you do not break it within ten tries the secret code is revealed so you can see how close you were.

Yes. Easy uses a four-peg code from six colours with no repeats, Normal uses four pegs from six colours with repeats allowed, and Hard uses a five-peg code from eight colours with repeats — far more combinations to reason through.
