About Nine Men's Morris

Nine Men’s Morris is a classic mill game played on a board of 24 points — three nested squares joined by midpoint lines. You play the dark pieces against the computer’s light ones. In the first phase you take turns placing your nine pieces on empty points. Once every piece is down, the second phase begins and you slide a piece along a line to a neighbouring empty point. Whenever you line up three of your pieces along a marked line you form a mill, which lets you remove one of the computer’s pieces. Grind the computer down to two pieces, or leave it with no legal move, and you win. Choose a difficulty to set how hard the computer thinks. It runs entirely in your browser. No signup, no download, nothing uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

First you take turns placing your nine pieces on empty points. After all the pieces are placed, you take turns sliding a piece to an adjacent empty point. Forming a line of three (a mill) lets you remove one of your opponent’s pieces. You win by reducing the opponent to two pieces or leaving them with no legal move.

A mill is three of your own pieces lined up along one of the board’s marked straight lines. Each time you complete a new mill you immediately remove one of the opponent’s pieces.

You may remove any enemy piece that is not currently part of a mill. Only if every one of your opponent’s pieces is inside a mill are you allowed to take one from a mill.

Once all nine pieces are placed, you tap one of your pieces to select it and then tap a connected, empty point next to it. Pieces slide along the lines to adjacent points only.

A player loses when reduced to just two pieces (two pieces can never form a mill), or when it is their turn and they have no legal move available.
