It subtracts the start date from the end date calendar-style, borrowing days from the previous month and months from the year, so the breakdown reflects real month lengths.
The first is the calendar gap (for example 1 year, 2 months, 5 days). The totals re-express that whole span as a single number of months, weeks or days.
By default the end date is the boundary, so the gap between two consecutive days is one day. Tick include-end-day to count both endpoints, which adds one day to every total.
It counts every day in the range except Saturdays and Sundays, so you get the number of weekdays in the period. It does not subtract public holidays.
