How it works

  1. Enter text or a file. Type/paste text, or open Advanced options to hash a file.
  2. Read the digests. MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 appear together.
  3. Copy or compare. Copy a hash, or check it against a published checksum.

About this tool

Produce checksums and hashes for text or a file across the common algorithms at once — MD5, SHA-1 and the SHA-2 family (256/384/512). It updates as you type, so you can compare a download against its published checksum, fingerprint a string, or generate a digest for a cache key. The SHA hashes use the browser’s built-in Web Crypto, and file hashing reads the file locally — nothing is sent anywhere. Note MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for checksums but are not secure for passwords; use a real password hash for that.

What people use it for

  • Verify a download against its published checksum
  • Fingerprint a string or build a cache key
  • Compare two files by their hashes
  • Generate a SHA-256 digest for an integrity check

Frequently asked questions

MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 — all computed at once so you can grab whichever you need.

No. SHA hashes use the browser’s Web Crypto API and files are read locally, so nothing leaves your device.

Yes — open Advanced options and choose a file. Its SHA digests are computed in the browser (MD5 is shown for text input).

No. They’re fine for checksums and fingerprints but broken for security. Passwords need a slow, salted hash like bcrypt or Argon2, which isn’t what this tool is for.

That’s the point of a hash — it’s deterministic. Identical input always yields identical output, which is how checksums verify integrity.

Yes — a client-side tool, no account, no limits, nothing to meter.

Yes. It runs in your browser, so Hash Generator works on phones and tablets as well as desktop — there is no app to install.

Usually just a few seconds for a typical file — Hash Generator starts working the moment you give it your input.

Casual use is unlimited, under a generous fair-use cap that keeps it fast for everyone.
